Is there a particular city that you long to visit? Perhaps you’d like to explore the floating markets of Bangkok or take a long walk along the Thames River in London. Have you considered ascending the heights of the Eiffel Tower in Paris? How about slaloming the indoor ski slopes in Dubai.
Isn’t it exciting to picture yourself at some far away city, arriving after a long journey and enjoying the great food, the market place, the beautiful landscapes, the museums, the theatres and the parks? How about the people?
When you think of visiting a city, have you considered the greatest city ever built?
In Hebrews chapter 11, the writer commends the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham who were looking toward the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is GOD. They longed to arrive and experience all that GOD has prepared for them.
By faith, they recognized their status on Earth—they were only pilgrims and visitors to the earthly cities. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:6;
Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:16 NIV
If you’re in the family of GOD, one day, you will make a journey and arrive at that glorious city. You will inherit a better country. A country better than we can imagine—it’s what GOD can imagine! You will enter into the joy of the Lord and be with Him and His people forever.
On Earth, a person who has sacrificed and served the people of a particular city are sometimes honored with a key to that city. It’s only symbolic though. They don’t really own the city. If you’re in Jesus Christ your situation is altogether different. The Saints of the most high GOD will share ownership in the greatest city ever built. The Bible says in Luke 12:32;
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” NIV
No symbolism or allegory in this verse. The followers of Jesus Christ will take possession of that glorious city and reign with Jesus for all eternity.
Can you picture yourself there, enjoying the great food, the markets, the beautiful landscapes, the museums, the theatres and the parks. How about the people?
You won’t be just a visitor—you’ll have the key and share ownership of the city–you’ll finally be home.

What are you looking towards today? The famous evangelist John Wesley said, “I judge all things only by the price they shall gain in eternity.”
